Northwest A&F University (NWAFU) is located in Yangling, Shaanxi Province, the birthplace of Chinese Agricultural civilization and today’s the National Agriculture High-tech Industrial Demonstration zone. It is a key national comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education and is supported by Ministry of Education's "Project 985" and “Project 211”. It has been ranked as one of the leading universities in China’s “Double First” program.
The University originated from National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry which was founded in 1934. In September 1999, approved by the State Council, seven institutions, namely Northwest Agricultural University, Northwest Forestry College, Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Northwest Institute of Water Resources Science, Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Forestry, and Northwest Institute of Botany merged and became today’s Northwest A & F University
The past eighty years since the university’s establishment has witnessed generations of its faculty and students adhering to the educational philosophy of “managing state fundamentals, solving civilian livelihood, and respecting scientific research” and practicing the University motto of “Sincerity, Simplicity, Bravery and Perseverance ”. The University gives prime concern to our nation and people by sticking to the integration of education, research and provision of social services, and has made significant contributions to China’s agricultural modernization and scientific research.
NWAFU is the only education institution in China that is completely equipped with disciplines of agriculture, forestry, and water sciences. Currently there are all together 25 colleges (departments, institutes) and Graduate School, 13 post-doctor stations, 16 major disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees, 28 major disciplines authorized for master degrees, and 66 programs for bachelor degrees. There are seven state key disciplines and two state key disciplines under incubation. Agricultural science has been ranked 18th globally according to US NEWS and the research in agricultural field has been ranked among ESI top 1‰ globally. Six disciplines regarding agriculture, plant and animal, engineering, environmental science and ecology, chemistry, and biology and biochemistry have been rank among ESI top 1% globally. NWAFU owns two state key laboratories, one state laboratory for engineering, three state engineering research centers, three state scientific research stations, and 62 laboratories or engineering research centers at provincial or ministerial level. At present, there are 20,820 undergraduate students and 8,162 post graduates enrolled, in which there are 1,953 doctoral students. During the past eight decades, more than 160,000 professional talents have stepped out of campus to work home and abroad, among whom 19 have become academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. They have made outstanding contributions to northwest area and whole China in agricultural modernization and social economic development of rural areas.
NWAFU always aims at frontier development of high technology. In accordance with national and regional strategic demands, NWAFU has conducted a lot of fundamental and applied researches in areas of animal and plant breeding, plant protection, agricultural bio-technology, dry land agriculture and irrigation technology, and comprehensive treatment to water and soil loss in China’s loess plateau which have posed distinguished features and priorities. NWAFU has acquired more than 6000 accumulated scientific achievements in various areas, among which over 1800 achievements are awarded. Outstanding research accomplishments include“Bima-1”, the most widely planted wheat variety in China, and “Xiaoyan-6”, the leading replacement variety of wheat, and the apple variety “Qinguan” bred by home team and cultivated most widely domestically so far. The direct economic benefit of these achievements values over RMB300 billion.
NWAFU is the first university of its kind in China to explore university-based extension approach to serve regional and national agricultural development, and is the first university to set up Institute for Rural Development. Up to now, NWAFU has established cooperative relationships with over 100 local government or industries and set up 27 agricultural extension & demonstration stations and 45 demonstration bases (including “Expert Work Yard” and demonstration fields) in the regional leading industrial area across the country, making the research directly connected with field and households and creating cumulatively economic benefits about RMB 50 billion. The university’s sci-tech park & pioneer park for persons who returned from overseas study have been accepted as first group of university sci-tech parks
NWAFU is actively engaged in China’s “Belt and Road” strategy through broadening international education and academic cooperation. It has established cooperation relationships with over 154 universities or institutes in the world, of which 14 are among the global top 100. Annually, there are about 1000 scholars coming from abroad for academic exchange and cooperation. Currently there are eleven international cooperation and exchange platforms jointly established, such as Sino-US Research Center for Soil and Water Conservation and Environmental Protection, Sino-Canada Innovation Center for Dry-land Agriculture, etc. The University initiated Silk Road Agricultural Education and Research Innovation Alliance, which has been joined by 59 universities or institutes from 12 Silk Road countries. Since “eleventh five-year plan”, there have been 1401 students from NWAFU supported by government to study abroad. NWAFU has the authorization to admit international students funded by Chinese government scholarship. There are currently 264 international students studying in campus.
College of Forestry (Academy of Forestry) is one of the colleges with longest history and traditions in NWAFU. It can be dated back to 1934 when it was just a forestry group within the National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1999, new College of Forestry was established through amalgamation of the relevant disciplines in formerly different institutes ---- Northwest College of Forestry, Shaanxi Academy of Agriculture, Shaanxi Academy of Forestry, Northwest Botanical Institute as well as Qinling-Bashan Institute of Northwest Agricultural University. Over 80 years development, the College has become one with three types of disciplines covering agronomy, science and engineering in harmony with development of hierarchic programs ranging from bachelor, master to doctoral degrees.
The College is authorized to provide four undergraduate programs----forestry, forest protection, chemical engineering of forest products, and wood science and engineering. In associate with education programs, there are five laboratories for undergraduate education, one center for internship, nine laboratories for scientific research and one state-funded virtual simulation laboratory. In addition to having the right to offer professional master degree in forestry, the College owns one post-doctoral work station and is authorized in two major disciplines (Forestry and Ecology) to offer doctoral degree and in major discipline of forest engineering to offer master degree. Silviculture, forest protection and ecology are awarded as the key disciplines of the province. Great advancement has been made in the fields of dry resistant afforestation, ecosystem restoration in the loess plateau, climate change in relation to forest ecosystem response, tree mycorrhiza in relation to stress tolerance, sustained control and prevention of major forest pest and diseases, genetic breeding and fine cultivar selection for high-yield production regarding poplar, Chinese pine, walnut, chestnut, Jujube, Sichuan pepper, Eucommia (Du-zhong in Chinese language), Kernel-apricot and bio-energy resources research. All these achievements have provided a forceful support to and played a significant role in the national ecological environment construction and social-economic development.
The College owns ten research or innovation platforms: Key Laboratory of Silviculture on Loess Plateau supported by State Administration of Forestry; Qinling National Forest Ecosystem Research Station; Northwest Nature Reserve Conservation Research Center supported by State Administration of Forestry; Jujube Engineering Research Center supported by State Administration of Forestry; Sichuan Pepper Engineering Research Center supported by State Administration of Forestry; Propagation and Protection Engineering Center for Old and Famous Trees supported by State Administration of Forestry; Shaanxi Key Comprehensive Laboratory of Forestry; Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Economic Plants Development& Utilization; Shaanxi Forestry Research Center; Sci-tech Innovation Platform of Northwest Forest Ecosystem Protection and Management supported by the State “985 Program”. Besides, there are eight extension and social service stations affiliated to the College, that is, Shanyang Walnut Experiment and Demonstration Station, Qinjian Jujube Experiment and Demonstration Station, Fengxian Sichuan Pepper Experiment and Demonstration Station, Zhen’an Chestnut Experiment and Demonstration Station, Ankang North-subtropical Fruit Trees Experiment and Demonstration Station, Changji Modern Agricultural Experiment and Demonstration Station of Xinjiang, Weibei Walnut Experiment and Demonstration Station and Akesu Demonstration Base for New and Fine Varieties of Economic Trees in Xinjiang. Wei River Experiment Station and Yangling Nursery are two bases in service for teaching and application practice, which makes a solid basis for cultivating innovative people and doing scientific research.
For years, the college has been sticking to internationalization through strategy of connectivity to outside and introduction to inside. It has established cooperative relationships with over 20 universities or institutes, such as University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (Boku), TechnischeUniversitätMünchen (TUM), Universität Freiburg, Georg-August-University of Göttingen, Wageningen University, University of Rzeszów (Poland), University of Eastern Finland, University of Helsinki, Swedish Agricultural University(SLU), University of British Columbia, University of Tokyo, and Cornell University, etc. The year of 2017 witnessed the admission of APFNet students of master program for the first time. Since 2004, the College has been the only university member in China as the partner of Erasmus Mundus Program- European Forestry. Over a decade, European scholars of the program consortium members came to visit the college for academic cooperation and Europeans students came to do their Applied Practice (AP). Our students have the chance to apply for scholarship offered by Erasmus Mundus program for pursuit of the master degree of European Forestry. The number of students admitted by European Forestry from our college accounts for over 70% of the total number of students admitted from China. Some college teachers have been funded by the program to teach and visit the European universities. Since 2014, the College carried out an international program by selecting eligible undergraduate students to join the summer programs offered by the University of British Columbia (UBC) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT). Up to now, there have been 144 students funded to go abroad through the summer programs. Two international cooperation platforms initiated by NWAFU—Sino-Austrian Research Center for Environmental Protection and Sino-Japan Eucommia Research Center, are managed by the College, which facilitates the academic cooperation between two sides concerning the issues of common interests.
