Nanjing Forestry University (NFU), located in the east of Nanjing, at the foot of Purple Mountain and east of Xuanwu Lake, is a provincial key university co-administered by Jiangsu Provincial Government and the Ministry of Education of China. In 2017, it enters into the list of “Double First-Class” University Project. It has evolved from the Forest Departments of Central University (founded in 1902) and of Jinling University (founded in 1910) and to Nanjing Forestry College in 1952, being one of the only three higher forestry universities. In 1955, it was integrated with different forest departments of Wuhan University, Nanchang University and Hubei Agricultural Collage and was renamed as Nanjing Technological College of Forest Products in 1972. In 1983, it has resumed its name as Nanjing Forestry College, and in 1985 it has obtained the present name. At present, NFU has 22 schools including colleges of Forestry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechatronic engineering, Civil Engineering, Economics and Management, Humanities and Social Sciences, Information Science and Technology, Landscape Architecture, Science, Foreign Languages, Art Design, Home and Industrial Design, Light Industry and Food Science, Automobile and Transportation Engineering, Biology and Environment, Graduate Studies, International Education, etc.
NFU offers a wealth of programs spanning across a broad range of fields with distinctive features. It has been authorized to provide 8 mobile post-doctoral station programs, 7 first-level discipline doctoral degree programs, 39 second-level discipline doctoral degree programs, 22 first-level master's degree authorization points, 93 second-level master's degree authorization points, and 27 professional degree authorization categories or areas. There are 6 national key disciplines, 2 of which are disciplines (Forestry Engineering and Ecology) at a first level and 4 (Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, Chemical Processing Engineering of Forest Products, Wood Science and Technology, Forest Protection and Forest Engineering)at a second level. In addition, it boasts 1 key disciplines at the first class of Jiangsu provincial level conferring as the National key disciplines cultivation point, 4 Jiangsu Provincial preponderant subjects,7 first-grade and 2 second-grade key disciplines authorized by the State Forestry Administration, 4 key disciplines of Jiangsu Province and 2 provincial key cultivating discipline. The number of NFU’s national key disciplines ranks top among Jiangsu Provincial colleges and universities. NFU has achieved great performance in the fourth round of the national discipline evaluation with two subjects rated as A+”and one A-”, occupying the first place among the forestry universities in China and Jiangsu Provincial colleges and universities.
NFU enrolls students nationwide. There are currently 74 undergraduate majors, among which are 6 state-level National Provincial Characteristic Specialties, 16 provincial-level specialties and 4 specialties of university brand in Jiangsu province. There is one state-level Training Mode Innovative Experimental Area, one innovative experimental base of provincial talent training model, one excellent national-level teaching team, 2 remarkable provincial-level teaching teams, 4 outstanding provincial-level scientific and technological innovative teams,4 state-level open courses, 30 quality provincial-level courses and 5 provincial-level online open courses. At present, NFU has 2 state-level experimental teaching demonstration centers, 18 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers and practical education centers, 2 national virtual simulation education centers and 1 national extramural practice base for undergraduate. The "Landscape" and "Chemical Processing of Forest Products" were included in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" professional comprehensive reform pilot program by the Ministry of Education, and 23 majors such as 8 Forestry, and English were listed in Jiangsu Province's "Twelfth Five-Year Plan". Forestry majors (Forestry, Landscape, Forest Protection) and Forestry Engineering majors (Chemicals forest Products, Wood Science and Engineering, Forest Engineering) were selected to “Plan of outstanding agricultural and forestry people” released by the Ministry of Education. Since 1991, NFU has made proud achievements in teaching talents: one First Prize and seven Second Prize of National Teaching Achievements; two Grand Prize, twelve First Prize and eighteen Second Prize of Provincial Teaching Achievements. In 2010, one doctoral thesis was awarded as “National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation”. NFU won honorary title of “the advanced university of education in Jiangsu Province” in 2012 and was honored as “the demonstration school of the normalization of language and writing in Jiangsu Province” in 2016. The total number of students is more than 30,000, among whom are 6,200 master, doctoral and foreign students. NFU has totally fostered over 100,000 graduates and postgraduates as well as foreign students, most of whom have now become the backbones of the forestry development of China.
NFU is one of the first universities which is qualified to confer doctoral and master's degrees in nationwide. The school has a highly qualified teaching staff, equipped with more than 2050 faculty members, among them are more than 1,280 full-time teachers, 181 PhD supervisors, and 700 teachers with senior titles. NFU currently has 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 external academicians, 1“Cheung Kong Scholars Awarded Program”distinguished professors,1 granted with funds from the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 3 candidates of the“Thousand Talents Program for Young Scholars”, 6 of National Million Talents Project, 4 leading talents of “Ten Thousands Talents Program”, 6 young and middle-aged experts with prominent contributions in nationwide and more than 110 experts enjoying Special allowances of the State Council and government; NFU has cultivated many professional talents in various occupations, among whom 1 member of National Professional and technical personnel, 5 are on the list of National Outstanding Scientific and Technical Workers, 5 talents of Youth Science and Technology Innovation leader of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and 6 professors who are on the Scheme of Education Ministry’s New Century Excellent Talents; NFU currently possess 2 excellent teams which are “Top Talent and Innovation Team “ of the National Thousand Talents Program and “Innovation team” of Changjiang Scholars Incentive plan. There are 4 members of First level Chief Scientist of “333 Project” in Jiangsu Province, 3 provincial famous teachers, 18 professors are Distinguished or Chair Professors of Jiangsu and 16 outstanding mid-aged experts in Ministerial and Provincial-level. NFU has more than 300 members in varied projects from the Provincial “333 Project” in the second and third levels, “Double Innovation Plan”, “Qing Lan Project” to “Six Talent Peaks in Jiangsu Province”, and 12 teams among which are Science and Technology Innovation in Jiangsu, Qing Lan Project and other provincial innovation teams.
With the advantage of the characteristic disciplines, NFU has focused on the independent innovation and the cooperation of the industry, university and research for a long time and fruitful results have been obtained in the projects of scientific research, technological innovation and the transformation of scientific achievements. At present, NJU possesses a National Engineering Center of Biologic Materials for Mechanical Products Packing and 49 R&D research institutions, key labs and engineering research centers at the ministerial and provincial levels, among which are the Key Open Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Biotechnology, the Research Center of Fast-growing Trees and Agro-fiber Material Engineering, the Research Center of Modern Forestry Innovation in South China and the Testing Center of Forest Tree Seed in South China. There are also 66 university-based research institutions and centers. More than 1,000 projects are in research each year. In recent years, NFU has undertaken over 800 research projects, including the “973” project, the “863” subject, National Science and Technology Support projects, the “948” project, the National Key R&D program, and the ministerial and provincial key projects. It also has completed more than 400 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China. Besides, over 1500 scientific research has passed identification and got patents. More than 300 achievements have been awarded by the state, ministry and province, including National Invention Award(one first prize, two second prizes, and one third and fourth prize respectively), National Natural Science Award(one second prize), and National Science and Technology Award (five first prizes and 46 second and third prize in all). The rest achievements have received ministerial and provincial awards. NFU issues academic publications such as: Journal of Nanjing Forestry University (one edition for natural sciences and the other for humanities and social sciences), Journal of Forestry Engineering and Interior Design and Construction, etc. Noticeably, Journal of Nanjing Forestry and Journal of Forestry Engineering are core Chinese periodical, the key magazine of China technology and core SCD periodical and Interior Design and Construction is the key magazine of China. What’s more, Journal of Nanjing Forestry University (natural science edition) was selected into the 2017-2020 “Outstanding S&T Journal of China (F5000)”.
NFU attaches great importance to internationalization and takes an active role in developing open education and international exchange cooperation. NFU has established long-term cooperative relationships in academic research, teacher training and talent exchange with dozens of universities and scientific research institutions from more than 20 countries including the United States, Germany, Canada, Sweden, Russia, Japan, France, Italy, Finland, Iran etc. It also established a Confucius Institute in cooperation with Alabama A&M University of America. We will actively explore the implementation of multi-mode and multi-level international talent training. Some special international cooperation programs have been launched, such as the 3+2 program with the University of British Columbia, 3+1+1 program with the University of New Brunswick, 3+1 program with Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, 3+1+1 program with the University of the West, 3+2 program with the University of North Texas. Hundreds of students in NFU go abroad to have international education, and around 400 international students come to NFU to study and exchange annually.
NFU has the total area of 10725 mu, including 1257 mu of the main campus in Xinzhuang, 4800mu of Huaian campus, 3300mu of Technological Base in Baima and 41mu of Engineering Training Center in Jiangning. The total teaching and research equipment of the university reaches the value of 750 million Yuan. The university library has a collection of 1.8 million paper books and 5.8 million of e-books. And the campus broadband network has already covered the whole campus with Gigabit bandwidth.
With the new ideology of innovation, coordination, ecological-consciousness, opening and sharing, NFU is further developing and exploring the effective ways to provide the services for economic construction and social development, endeavoring to build itself into an outstanding university at home and abroad integrating disciplines of science, engineering, agriculture, liberal arts, management, economics, philosophy, law and arts with special emphasis on studies on recourses, ecology and environment.
